Talking to IANS, Bhansali said: “Mastani is someone what Madhubala and Meena Kumari did in their heydays. Deepika has never ever gone over the top. No woman has ever looked so beautiful on the Indian screen in the longest time. It’s a dear character to me.”

Priyanka Chopra Talks About Playing Kashibai

Priyanka Chopra

In an exclusive interview with Bollywoodlife.com, Priyanka Chopra spoke of her latest role, playing Kashibai in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani. The film which has garnered much attention has received exceptional recognition from fans and film critics alike.

The actress expressed her thoughts upon playing the pivotal role, revealing that she wouldn’t have agreed to the decisions Kashibai makes regarding Bajirao’s relationship with Mastani.

“To play a character that I don’t agree with, as a woman if my husband fell in love with someone else I would say thank you very much, goodbye! I am out! Kashi did that in her own way also, she said I love you enough to see you happy, if you are happy with her please go just don’t come back to my door, which at that time was a big deal. Kashi was forogtten in history , nobody talks about her, nobody knows of her, because Bajirao and Mastani’s story is so forbidden and so epic, and hats off to Sanjay sir for giving her such a strong voice.”

Priyanka went on to discuss, her belief in Bhansali’s cinematic creation of films was what made her determined to play the role even more, despite the director assuming she wouldn’t have accepted it.

“I always knew Kashi was an amazing role, I was the first person to be cast for the film. I remember when I was doing Mary Kom, Sanjay sir said she won’t do it, and we discussed it. For me what was wonderful about Kashi was that am a greedy Sanjay Bhansali fan, am a believer in his world and cinema. I can talk to him for hours about films and his acute understanding of human emotions and that is what Kashi was for me. I used to look forward to coming on the set all dressed up as Kashi. He throws googlys, and am an actor who loves hitting a six when its thrown at me.”

Recounting how she undertook to play Kashibai, Priyanka explained, “My instincts come on, am not a prep or a method actor, I have always been very instinctive. He has such a beautiful understanding of silences and Kashi has no words, so silences were all that I had, my eyes and face, it was like Jhilmil, there wasn’t much she could say it was the 1700′s, so it was a welcome challenge.”

Priyanka Chopra: “I Was The First Person To be Cast In Bajirao Mastani”

Priyanka Chopra who plays Kashibai in the highly anticipated forthcoming film Bajirao Mastani, addresses the reason why she took on to play a strong character whose existence in history has not much presence.

The actress points out, she took the challenging role for director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, being the first to be casted.

“I did this film for Sanjay Leela Bhansali. I know you all will ask me, ‘Mastani is played by Deepika (Padukone), and Bajirao is played by Ranveer (Singh). So why did you do this film?’ Let me tell you, I was the first person to be cast in this film. I remember Sanjay came to me with this script and he was clear he wanted me to do this film.”

She added: “I thought Kashibai’s character was very heart-breaking. This is a feminine character and it was very challenging for me to do the role… It’s a special film for me. I am just super excited to be part of it.”

Priyanka Chopra Kashibai

Priyanka as Kashibai for Bajirao Mastani

Playing Bajirao’s first wife – a vulnerable character – Priyanka admits it made her keen: “It is such a role that if you do it right, it will be part of your legacy. Kashibai is a 500-year-old character, with no other reference available. People talk about Bajirao and Mastani’s love story but the biggest reason to play Kashibai was to portray the story of a woman, who has never been spoken about in history. No one asks ‘uske dil pe kya beeti, uska kya hua?’ I rarely play such soft characters. Lately, I have played only tough characters, jo talvar utha ke tayyar hoti hai. Playing Jhilmil (Barfi) or Kashi is novel for me. It was a challenge to portray someone who can’t protect herself. I had to play it with conviction to make people believe that the woman’s heart was hurting.”

The period romance drama with Ranveer Singh as Bajirao, Deepika Padukone as Mastani and Priyanka Chopra as Kashibai is set to hit screens on December 18.

Ranveer Singh To Sport Light-Coloured Eyes For Bajirao Mastani

Ranveer Singh 'Bajirao Mastani'

In his latest role as Peshwa Baji Rao in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani, Ranveer Singh has had to make some adjustments with his looks. The actor who has gone bald for the role, will also be sporting light-coloured eyes – wearing contact lenses as sources have informed.

The look is fitting according to the 17th century Maratha general who was said to be a Hindu Kokanastha Chitpavan Brahmin; the sect was known for its fair-skin and light-colour eyes – either being blue or grey.

In earlier Marathi TV serials based on the Maratha, actors portraying the character were shown to have light coloured eyes.

Manoj Joshi who acted as Baji Rao in Rau which was aired on Doordarshan in 1990 described the character and how hard it would have been for some actors: “That was my first serial and those days, there was no prosthetic make-up. Baji Rao was said to have a sharp nose and light brown eyes. Since I had both, I didn’t need any make-up.”

Bhansali who is known to be a perfectionist when it comes to his work, has made sure the actor has gotten into character for the imminent movie. The movie also features Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone in leading roles and will release on December 18.

Priyanka Chopra who plays the first wife of Peshwa Baji Rao in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani, revealed her role as Kashibai. The actress mentioned that her role has been challenging, and like all Bhansali films, his forthcoming project is an extravagant mega-budget.

The look for the actor’s character took over a year to be carefully detailed with the traditional costumes to be sourced from Nagpur, Nashik and Pune. Priyanka will be seen wearing more than 85 Navvaris  (11-meter-long Maharashtrian style saree) in the film.

A source told DNA, “In Bajirao Mastani, PC plays typical Peshwa wife, will wear nose rings (handpicked from Nashik and Pune) and will look as dignified as he status demands. She will wear the traditional Marathi sari, the Navvari (11 meters; Peshwin style). Throughout the film, she will be seen wearing over 85 navvaris sourced from various places by the film’s stylist Anju Modi.”

Anju Modi who previously designed the costumes for Bhansali’s Ram-Leela, spoke about the process of putting the outfits together.

“I started work on the film in April last year. I travelled to the Ajanta and Ellora caves and visited Paithan in Aurangabad. I also visited the Shivaji Museum and made a few trips to Pune to do my own research on the clothes and jewellery.”

Anju chose to have the saris in colours of rose pink, marigold yellow, sea green, fuchsia pink, aqua blue, blood red and ivory. The designer says, “The sarees were difficult to source as they aren’t available now. Also, we wanted bright colours as Priyanka’s character is that of a young, confident woman.”

The stylist also hand picked Maratha jewellery – mostly from Pune, “We have also picked up different kind of nathnis and shelas. Shelas are an integral part of the Maratha woman’s wardrobe,” Anju says.

Talking about her experience of working on the film, Anju said, “It was an eye-opener for me to work on this film as I had never been exposed to Maratha jewellery. Priyanka too was extremely interested and involved with the look and personally looked into her clothes.”

Bajirao Mastani is a period-drama based on the love story of warrior Peshwa Baji Rao (played by Ranveer Singh) and his second wife Mastani (played by Deepika Padukone).
