Deepika Padukone has revealed why she walked out after filming six days for Race 2. Padukone was the leading lady for the upcoming Bollywood film but after being called ‘unprofessional’ and ‘unethical’ by the Race 2 producer Ramesh Taurani, and being sued for leaving the project she decided to break her silence.
She expressed her feelings not want to opt out of the project but had no choice since having to adjust dates for other projects since the film was delayed a number of times: “I have tremendous respect for Rameshji and that was never my intention. I feel very bad about opting out of the film, but I have no other option. It was a very hard decision, but I had to make it as the dates kept going back and forth and I have other commitments too that I have to live up to.”
The actress also said she was aware of the formal complaint the producer had made against her with CINTAA (Cine & TV Artistes Association) for leaving the project mid – way: “Yes. They have asked me for my comments and I will be sending the same shortly. He alleges that you left the film after the shooting began? The film has been delayed for one-and-a-half years. I adjusted my dates all this time.”
She added: “And I would still do it, but now those dates are committed to other films. It’s a genuine problem. I wasted four months last year that I had kept aside for this film, but now my other films are starting and I can’t adjust more.”
She also made it clear that she had signed to take on the leading role in Race 2 when she was asked 2 years ago but since it had been kept on being delayed Padukone explained she needed to give up the role in order to start on other projects that had clashed with the project: “My contract with TIPS was till 2011. I still wanted to do ‘Race 2’ despite the delay, but now my dates are clashing with other films. And much as I want to, there is nothing I can do about it.”
When asked if she refused to meet Taurani she again cleared the false rumours she had declined to meet him as she said: “I never refused to meet him. I was out of country and when I came back at 7 am, I had to shoot the climax of ‘Cocktail’ at 9 am. He later came up to the sets and I explained him my problem.”
At the time when Padukone had walked out Taurani spoke out saying she never left a reason why she had abandoned the project as he said: “She did not even apologize after she walked out of the film. I went to the set and tried to reason with her but she just did not listen – this behaviour is unacceptable.”
He then went on to say he had never been in a situation like this in his 25 years working as a producer: “I have been a part of the Hindi cinema industry for 25 years. I have made several blockbusters. I have worked with famous actresses such as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Katrina Kaif, Vidya Balan and Kareena Kapoor. But I have never faced a situation like this before.”
Taurani continued to say after constant delays of having to change dates to start shooting the film, when the actress walked out after six days she had let everyone down including the other actors and directors working on the project too: “Earlier, in October, we had to change our schedule because Deepika had date problems. This was due to her film with Ayan Mukerji to be produced by Karan Johar.”
He added: “At the time, I had spoken to Karan and worked out a schedule that would help Deepika manage both the projects. Now, when everything is in place, she just walks out after six days of shooting. What can I say? We are left with no choice. Our directors and the other actors are extremely annoyed with her.”
