Priyanka Chopra who plays Kashibai in the highly anticipated forthcoming film Bajirao Mastani, addresses the reason why she took on to play a strong character whose existence in history has not much presence.
The actress points out, she took the challenging role for director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, being the first to be casted.
“I did this film for Sanjay Leela Bhansali. I know you all will ask me, ‘Mastani is played by Deepika (Padukone), and Bajirao is played by Ranveer (Singh). So why did you do this film?’ Let me tell you, I was the first person to be cast in this film. I remember Sanjay came to me with this script and he was clear he wanted me to do this film.”
She added: “I thought Kashibai’s character was very heart-breaking. This is a feminine character and it was very challenging for me to do the role… It’s a special film for me. I am just super excited to be part of it.”
Playing Bajirao’s first wife – a vulnerable character – Priyanka admits it made her keen: “It is such a role that if you do it right, it will be part of your legacy. Kashibai is a 500-year-old character, with no other reference available. People talk about Bajirao and Mastani’s love story but the biggest reason to play Kashibai was to portray the story of a woman, who has never been spoken about in history. No one asks ‘uske dil pe kya beeti, uska kya hua?’ I rarely play such soft characters. Lately, I have played only tough characters, jo talvar utha ke tayyar hoti hai. Playing Jhilmil (Barfi) or Kashi is novel for me. It was a challenge to portray someone who can’t protect herself. I had to play it with conviction to make people believe that the woman’s heart was hurting.”
The period romance drama with Ranveer Singh as Bajirao, Deepika Padukone as Mastani and Priyanka Chopra as Kashibai is set to hit screens on December 18.
