Duke And Duchess Of Cambridge Welcome Daughter: Name For Britain’s Princess Revealed

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have welcomed their second child, a baby girl on Saturday (May 2). The Duchess delivered the baby at 8:34am. A statement from Kensington Palace announced the royal baby’s arrival:

“Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a daughter at 8.34am. The baby weighs 8lbs 3oz. The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth. The baby weighs 8lbs 3oz. The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth. The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales & The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry & members of both families have been informed.”

Kate and William posed with their baby daughter on the steps of the Lindo Wing, St Mary’s Hospital as they had previously two years ago with their son Prince George. The Duke and Duchess curtly presented their new-born child who was asleep in the Duchess’ arms.

The Duke and Duchess have named their daughter Charlotte Elizabeth Diana. The princess who is fourth in line to the throne behind her grandfather, father and older brother George will be known as Her Royal Highness Princess of Cambridge.

The Princess’ name plays several tributes to both Prince William’s parents and her grandmother, the Queen as well Kate’s family.

Charlotte, the feminine form of Charles gestures a nod to her grandfather, Prince Charles. The baby’s middle names honour Queen Elizabeth II, her great-grandmother  and the late Princess Diana, William’s mother.

Charlotte also features in Kate’s family, as the middle name of her younger sister, Pippa Middleton.

The Queen and other senior royals were informed of the baby’s name before announcement was made to the public.
